Zachary Himelhoch

Students learn the basics of Brazilian samba drumming while engaging in community-based music. Students will be assigned (and provided) an instrument to use during each session with the goal of developing solid technique and expanding on a myriad of rhythms for that specific instrument. The focus of each session is to engage students in music and culture while developing repertoire to be performed at a community performance in Oak Park.

Oak Park DrumHeadz is led and taught by local percussionist and educator, Zachary Himelhoch. Zach is a music educator, performer, producer, and author who aims to build community and connect people through music. Zach has a Masters in Music Education and a Bachelors in Music Performance and has experience teaching music in grades 2-12. He founded and led The DrumHeadz, a multi-school world percussion program in Metro Nashville Public Schools and currently serves as an adjunct faculty at VanderCook College of Music where he helps teachers integrate percussion into the classroom.

Summer 2022 will be broken up into 2 sessions: Each 7-week session will include six 1-hour lessons and conclude with a performance. All classes will be held outside and COVID-19 will continued to be monitored to inform mitigation strategies. Classes will be on Saturdays 1pm-2pm for students in grades 4-6 as of Fall 2022. Location will be announced after registration to allow flexibility for class size.
